Practices of Abstraction. A Meeting Point for Art and Science.
11 October 2023
Weld
Norrtullsgatan 7 (t-bana Odenplan)
113 29 Stockholm
What are the similarities between science and art? Is the divide really so fundamental or do they share common denominators? What can they learn and develop from each other?
This will be a kind of experiment. Let us think of the actual practice of artists and scientists! What is similar and what is different? We hope that this will allow us to let go of our old preconceptions and theories and find a common meeting point.
Two artists and two researchers have been invited. They are both similar and different. Each has been asked to prepare a 15-minute presentation about their practice. We hope that this generous contribution and an equally generous listening will lead to a discussion with all participants.
Hosted by Weld. Curated by Juanma González (Flat Octopus) and Axel Gagge & Lior Nønne Malue Hansen (Cluster 8 ) with the generous support of Anna Koch (Weld).

Organismo vivo/Levande organism is a 8’ video performance by the Spanish artist Marta Pinilla in collaboration with the Catalonian dancer Mireia Piñol that was conceived to take place at Naturhistoriska Riksmuseet on June 14th 2021. Produced by Flat Octopus with the support of Stockholm Stad and the Spanish Embassy.
Marta Pinilla is a Spanish multidisciplinary artist who has two degrees: Biology and Fine Arts (Complutense University, Madrid) and a master’s degree in Art and Sciences (Central Saint Martins; London): She merges both knowledge into performances and art installations.
Jesper O. T. Andersson works with sculpture and drawing in the expanded field focussing on plasticity as a starting point. He obtained his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in fine arts from the Royal Institute of Art in 2020.
Donglei Chen reconstructs the cellular-scale 3D architecture of fossilized skin, teeth, and body armor to reverse-engineer the development of animals living 500-300 million years ago to tell stories on the rise of fish and their conquest of land.
Amanda Selinder is a bioart and textile artist living and working in Uppsala. She explores living organisms such as fungi, and their ability to produce pigments depending on the surrounding environment.
Julia Hannukainen is a PhD student in theoretical physics previously working as a dancer. Searching for new ways of telling stories lead to their current interest in topological quantum phenomena.
Rasmus A Danneholt has been producing and performing electronic music since 2008. ORIGINS PROGRAM is an electronic live act from Stockholm, addressing the origins of the universe, various astronomical bodies, and life.
Ekaterina Lukoshkova is a visual artist who works with photography, writing, and video. Her artistic interest is the human body in contemporary value’s systems and the possibilities that come with it.
Flat Octopus is an international artist- and curator-run collective in Stockholm, Sweden, started in 2019. Our name derives from our focus: curating exhibitions in flats, alongside collaborations with other artist-run initiatives. Flat Octopus are: Alice Máselníková, Amr Hamid, Edit Fándly, Erik Wijkström, Juanma González and Paulina Granat
Cluster 8 is an interdisciplinary art collective that brings together artistic creation, curatorial practice, art history and quantum physics. The collective consists of Isabelle Ribe, curator; Sara Ekholm Eriksson, artist; Lior Nønne Malue Hansen, artist; Axel Gagge, artist and researcher in quantum physics; and Otto Ruin, art critic and writer.
Weld is an independent platform for experimental processes and knowledge production. Weld gathers impulses and ideas; combines and breaks them down; re-think them. Weld aims to share our physical and virtual space with people active within the disciplines of dance/visual arts/theatre/literature/ architecture/music/film and science to discover alternatives, new paths.
