Stockholm-based artist Heidi Edström at her studio in Konstfack where she is studying in her second year.

Heidi Edström is a performance artist and digital designer with a background in theatre. She is part of the performance art collective ‘Knölkollektivet’. Knowing Heidi mainly through her performance art, which she has been shown e.g. at Supermarket – Stockholm Independent Art Fair or Stockholm Fringe Festival (STOFF), Flat Octopus was especially curious to see more of her current work.

Heidi showed us her voluminous and awkwardly shaped sculptures of latex, silicon, crocheted wool, and all kinds of rubbish. The sculptures are described as ‘knölar’ – a Swedish expression for something that sticks out, something imperfect or defect.

We had some vivid discussions about the idea of ‘knöl’, on how to grow algae in artwork, and people’s fascination with the ugly and disgusting. Thank you Heidi for a lovely studio visit!
