Flat Octopus had the pleasure of doing a studio visit with the Stockholm-based painter Richard Griffith Carlsson.
Perhaps it is true that a space is a reflection of its inhabitants. Richard Griffith Carlsson’s studio emits calm and dedication to his ongoing introspection of architecture at the intersection of the private and public, and the imprint of spaces on the persons who move inside of them. It is rare one sees such a skillful and at the same time humble and thoughtful approach in an artist.
Working in a low-key colour scale, the artist often juxtaposes large abstract paintings and small figurative images creating a meta dialogue between the works themselves as well as with the surrounding architecture.
The amount of work on display was simply impressive in its range of formats and mediums – works both on canvas and paper or in gypsum – still keeping a coherent and clear identity and a certain melancholy of memories just escaping us, someone had just left the room.
