Flat Octopus had the pleasure of visiting Sara Elggren, a Stockholm-based textile artist, in her temporary studio at IASPIS, as she is one of the current artists in residence.

Sara transformed the studio into her fascinating weaving realm, with beautiful machines and her subtitle but extremely captivating textile creations.

Sara works with woven textiles as objects or spacial installations. Her pieces are often created in series, emphasizing the act of repetition and the multifold reading of non-explicit narratives that have been captured within the notations and codes used to create the artworks. For her, the notations not only provide a well-structured system but are also interpreted as interfaces between the weaving and weaver, or audience. Through archival findings, weaving technology, and history, Sara touches upon questions on how the notation and its ‘language’ affect the experience of the weave and how to reshape the knowledge and transform it into something additional and different through craftsmanship. At IASPIS, she is working more in-depth with her archival findings and with the relationship between woven objects and weaving’s notation.

Sara graduated from Konstfack’s master’s program CRAFT in 2016 and also holds a BA from Södertörn University’s Aesthetics Program, as well as studied at Kyoto University of Art and Design. Furthermore, she exchanged knowledge with weavers in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Sweden. She has been participating in exhibitions, residencies, and artistic collaboration projects in Sweden and internationally.
