Flat Octopus is proud to present AMISTAD/VÄNSKAP, a group exhibition bringing together the work of 26 artists working in Sweden. The exhibition is curated by Juanma González. Read his exhibition text below (scroll down for version in Spanish).

I once read that the first evidence of humanity was not found in an object or in a painted mark, but in a healed broken bone. It meant that someone had taken care of the injured person – had protected them from predators and stayed with them through the recovery. This primal act of care reveals the existence of an emotional bond that defines us as a species: a relationship built through shared moments that shape what we might call friendship.
This exhibition is about that – friendship. It is no coincidence that the Spanish word amistad comes from the Latin amicus, derived from amare, “to love”. Friendship, then, is a concept inherently tied to love. A friend is someone you love. Something that might sound naive or even trivial in today’s turbulent world, where ignorance is trivialised and hatred normalised through polarised discourse. But not everything is black or white. As both curator and artist, I believe art must give colour to the in-between tones – with brushstrokes filled with empathy and constructive intention. In doing so, love becomes a subversive act, one that prioritises us over the logic of you’re either with me or against me. Let’s make kindness, trust, and hope a trend – unashamedly. Not only among individuals, but also between communities and nations.
After more than thirteen years of living in Sweden, I’ve learned that despite our cultural and social differences, there are far more things that unite us than divide us. It is no coincidence that the Swedish word for friendship, vänskap, comes from the Old Norse vinr, whose Proto-Germanic root winōną means “to love” or “to be affectionate toward”. Different languages, yet they all speak the same truth.
AMISTAD/VÄNSKAP is an exhibition bringing together the work of 26 artists living in Sweden. They are all my friends, and together we represent the diversity of people inhabiting this global village. Some were born and raised in Sweden; others arrived to study, to be with their partners, or to escape war. They are friends I’ve walked with, laughed with, argued with, cried with, and, above all, learned from. Just as someone cared for that person with the broken bone hundreds of thousands of years ago, we too care for our relationships, for our differences, for our ways of expressing and understanding the world. In that gesture – so ancient, and so profoundly human – lies art itself.

Una vez leí que la primera evidencia de humanidad no ha sido encontrada en un objeto ni en un trazo gráfico, sino en un hueso fracturado que había sido sanado; lo que significa que alguien cuidó del herido, lo protegió de los depredadores y le acompañó durante su recuperación. Esta primaria intervención sanitaria revela la existencia de una relación afectiva que nos define como especie: construida por momentos compartidos que dan forma a un vínculo emocional que podríamos llamar amistad.
Esta exposición va sobre eso: la amistad. No en vano, esta palabra tiene su raíz en el latín amicus que a la vez viene del verbo amare, por lo que amistad es un concepto vinculado con el amor. Un amigo es una persona a la que amas. Algo que suena inocente y banal en el mundo tan convulso que vivimos, donde se banaliza la ignorancia y normaliza el odio mediante discursos polarizados. No todo es blanco o negro. Como comisario y artista, creo que el arte debe de dar color a las tonalidades intermedias con pinceladas cargadas de sentimientos positivos y propuestas constructivas. Convirtiendo así el amor en un acto subversivo que priorice el “nosotros” frente al “estás conmigo o contra mí”. Hagamos sin complejos del cariño, la confianza y la esperanza una tendencia. No sólo entre personas, también entre pueblos y países. Tras más de trece años viviendo en Suecia, he descubierto que pese a las diferencias culturales y sociales, hay más cosas que nos unen que nos separan. No es casual que AMISTAD en sueco sea VÄNSKAP, que proviene del nórdico antiguo vinr, cuya raíz proto-germánica es winōną, que significa amar o ser afectuoso con. Diferentes idiomas que hablan el mismo lenguaje.
AMISTAD/VÄNSKAP es una exposición que reúne la obra de 26 artistas que residen en Suecia. Todos son mis amigos, y juntos representamos la diversidad de personas que habitamos en esta aldea global. Amigos que han nacido y crecido en Suecia, pero también inmigrantes que llegaron para estudiar, para vivir con su pareja o huyendo de un país en guerra. Amigos con los que he andado, he reído, he llorado, he discutido y, sobre todo, he aprendido. Así como alguien cuidó de aquella persona con el hueso roto cientos de miles de años atrás, nosotros cuidamos nuestras relaciones, nuestras diferencias, nuestras formas de expresarnos y de entender el mundo. En ese gesto, tan antiguo como humano, también reside el arte.
