𝐋𝐣𝐮𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐯𝐢ć is a visual artist based in Stockholm, Sweden. Using sculpture and collaging as his predominant forms of expression, Popović observes the continuous and dynamic growth of cities, navigating through changing urban peripheries and investigating their material conditions – bringing to light their social and political implications.
By gathering materials from the hidden corners and blind spots of collective urban space, such as disposable plastic objects from construction sites and torn paper advertisements, the artist maps dynamic, ever-changing and hidden processes of the city, including intricate systems for political power, social displacement and capital exchange. Treating material evidence of gentrification from the urban landscape as archeological objects, juxtaposing and re-contextualising them in new configurations, the artist traces the repetitive structures of consumerism moving towards a collapse.
In an act of civil disobedience and through creative destruction, Popović’s work suggests pathways towards the invisible processes shaping our urban landscapes. His practice can be viewed as an artistic activism which refuses the seduction of consumption, that directs away from renewal, the permanent and the monumental, offering a critical approach to the capitalist framework of contemporary urban processes.
𝐋𝐣𝐮𝐛𝐨𝐦𝐢𝐫 𝐏𝐨𝐩𝐨𝐯𝐢ć (b.1987) holds a BFA in Fine arts from Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, and is currently enrolled in the MFA programme for Fine Arts at Konstfack. Popović’s work has previously been exhibited at Hjorten Skulpturpark (2023), Konsthallen (2022), Kulturhuset Stadsteatern (2021), Konstnärshuset (2019), and as part of the group show 𝘋𝘦 𝘈𝘯𝘪𝘯𝘨𝘴𝘭ö𝘴𝘢 here at Slipvillan in the summer of 2022. Popović has also participated in public talks and events, and curated his own group shows such as 𝘊𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘪𝘤𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘦𝘴 at Ulvsunda Bastusällskap (2022).
The exhibition takes place at 𝐒𝐥𝐢𝐩𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐚𝐧, a cultural centre located on Långholmen in Stockholm, run by cultural practitioners of a wide variety. It is a place for art, film, literature, theatre, music and more, where exhibitions, residencies, courses, projects and events are organised both by Slipvillan and by other invited collaborators. The building houses studio spaces and a gallery, and during the summer, the large garden outside is used for outdoor events of various kinds.
