Flat Octopus is pleased to welcome our new artist in residency, Kim Dotty Hachmann. The Berlin-based artist will spend two weeks in our countryside residency in Edsbruk in the north-east part of Småland near the coastline. Without the pressure of producing work, the artist has the time for reflection and focus on her work surrounded by forests and lakes. Hachmann will also present her practice to the local community on Saturday 7 November in an open studio event. As a part of the residency, Hachmann will exhibit with us in our 2026-2027 exhibition programme at ABC Konsthall in Vällingby.

Kim Dotty Hachmann is a Berlin-based artist whose work investigates the family as a complex terrain of affection, dependency, social expectations, and power. Moving between short films, video installations, and photography, she draws on her own family life to examine the contradictions of contemporary domesticity, from motherhood and childcare to educational systems, patchwork families, and the unequal distribution of emotional and reproductive labor.

Her autobiographical approach is neither confessional nor documentary in a conventional sense. Through staged situations, irony, and grotesque exaggeration, Hachmann disrupts familiar representations of family life, exposing the tensions between care and obligation, intimacy and control, individual desires and collective expectations. By placing herself and her family within these narratives, she makes visible the structures that shape women’s experiences, turning domestic life into a field of feminist critique and social reconfiguration.
