Mr Dandy Blue proposes that the Exhibition Case houses a modest selection of his Mariposa butterfly collection. This growing collection is comprised of families of origami-esque butterflies fashioned from vintage gay pornographic magazines. The butterflies’ unique markings reveal glimpses of bare male bodies yet rarely show anything identifiable. While the Mariposa collection grows, the original source material becomes more rare. Technological developments have virtually destroyed the climate where this material once flourished. The lepidopterarium offers a perfect environment for the exhibition of selected specimens as well as an occasion for considering wider issues including, but not limited to, our relations to nature, temporality, obsolescence, and sexualities.
Biography
Stuart Mayes is a visual artist living and working in Sweden. In addition to his studio practice he runs Glitter Ball showroom & projects, and art-education workshops. He studied at Dartington College of Arts and the Slade School of Fine Art as well as taking courses at Konstfack and the Royal Institute of Art Stockholm.
“The artist lives for things that sparkle and twinkle. I believe that the frivolous, camp, and decorative can be political. I bake a bad-ass chocolate cupcake. I am committed to art for all and I mean all. I am determined to make 2021 fun.”
Coordinated by Alice Máselníková.
The Exhibition Case is a sattelite exhibition project by Flat Octopus in collaboration with Crash Boom Bang. For information on how to apply to exhibit with us click HERE.
